The Department of Defense implemented military funeral honors in Section 578 of Public Law 106-65 in January of 2000. The honors ceremony includes presentation of a folded American flag to the next of kin and playing of Taps to send off with dignity those who have fallen in the line of duty, defending the United States and the principles that her people hold dear.
